Adobe deserves a lot of credit for its launch of Apple iOS devices into a lineup of popular gadgets. I would have been happy had it made a good move and put some of its existing photo products on those devices. Clearly, the company chose the right tools for the job. For a company that has had its struggles for years of merging the functionality of its Photoshop and Lightroom products, the new layout of the iPad, must be a relief. Between the new workflow and all the power of the new tools, the result is a design that makes the whole editing process much easier. I don’t know about you, but I’ve never quite felt as comfortable or confident with the traditional Lightroom window layout as I do when working on the new iPad Pro. Luckily, it took non-Apple entities to make the iPad Pro a worthy picture editor. For that, I’m grateful.
In the world of Photoshop CS6, the only metaphor that would communicate the same awe and awe that the new design communicates is one that would be almost as ludicrous as believing you’d come across the memory of a newborn baby human. If you’ve used Photoshop for any length of time, you’ll know that since Adobe’s last major release in 2012, it has lacked in key areas. Fortunately, the new Lightroom 5 solves this by incorporating the works of its rival.

As you work, save your changes and experiment, often you’ll use the same tools more than once. It’s worth taking a few moments to save your files before you make any changes. Doing this will ensure that you can easily return to working on or adjusting the file later.
Also, with any file you’ve opened, Photoshop is automatically saving a copy as you work. You can pause in the middle of an edit, go to another part of a file, and return to it later, because Photoshop will keep your latest version of the file. You can switch among earlier versions of the file if you want, or do more editing on the current version.
Layers in Photoshop provide an organized and forgiving means of working on several images or elements in one go. You can keep your edits separate in layers, which is especially helpful with adjustments. Each layer can have its own settings, channel, mask, or other settings. Layers also allow for cloning, which creates a duplicate (or exact copy) of an existing layer, so you can keep making changes to your file while leaving others untouched.
Grouping layers is a time-saving technique that lets you collapse many layers into one for easier use. There are a few ways to do this. To get started, select the layers you want to group, then hold down the Alt/Option key, or Control key on Windows, and click the Group option in the Layers panel. Then you can rename the grouped layers’ names or do more advanced edits, such as change a grouped layer’s mode or settings.

The new release also continues to tap into the power of performance boosts with software-assisted virtual desktops and hides and window animation, as well as new geometrical lens options. More than 30 days ago I started working on how to teach people how to use Adobe’s powerful software. What’s the most important component? It’s not the tools, it’s the basics. Each version of Photoshop has introduced a new set of changes that automate and streamline how you work. For example, Photoshop Elements is already one of the most powerful photo editing on the market. In fact, we couldn’t find a tool that could compete with Elements when we tested it back in 2011.
But that was then, and this is now. So when I started working on this book, I decided to focus on helping you master a minimal set of Photoshop features that will get you well started as a photo editor.
The last engineering update to Photoshop will be version 2020.3.0 which will also be the last update to Mac Photoshop. It will be the final update for Mac Photoshop after versions 2020.2.4, 2020.1.5, and 2020.0.4. After this, Mac users will have to seek out other apps for their needs.
