Judging by the performance and the “feel” of Photoshop CS6, it’s quite possible that this release could be the final version that brings PS into a par with the competition. The difference in speed and usability is noticeable, even when you choose Quality instead of Fast. I have grown accustomed to the new interface and I am starting to feel that other “magicians” are taken aback by the simple interface and the fact that every conceivable tool is sitting right on top of each other.
The story continues elsewhere. I use more creative apps like Affinity Photo and Capture One, I use CC for all my basic needs, and I do occasionally use PS for some special effects and projects. However, I am getting close to saying that PS is not the right tool for every job anymore.
A final comment regarding LR5
I am glad that I finally updated to the current version of Lightroom 5.2. A few months ago I made a wishlist in Adobe Forums (): “I wish I could switch to Lightroom 5.2”. That wish was fulfilled with today’s release after all. I tested Lightroom 5.2 on a Lenovo Ideapad MiBook 15 – which runs Windows 8.1 and Android 5.1 – for ~5 hours to make sure that I did not miss any new features. In my opinion Lightroom 5.2 is a perfect update. In my extended test, I encountered no major (or undesirable) problems. It is a great tool!
I do have to admit that Lightroom 5.2 is a mere fraction of the software Apple itself released, but I was happy with what Adobe released.
By default, Photoshop Elements allows you to save files in either Photoshop’s native Photoshop PSD, as well as JPEG format. But you can actually save in pretty much any format you want to, as long as you create a new preset. You can also quickly change an existing file’s version to any of its available options. Unlike Lightroom, which offers only 16-bit and 24-bit color-depth files, Photoshop Elements lets you save 24-bit and even 32-bit (true-color) images. Just make sure to set your compression quality settings to a higher level of 24-bit, as a low level will make thumbnails smaller.
What It Does: The Gradient tool is very similar to the Paint Bucket tool, but it adds a gradient to any selected area. This is a great tool for creating subtle text effects on images or backgrounds as well.
What It Does: The Pattern brush is the tool of choice to create some great pattern effects. Patterns can be used to create brushes, which are essentially different custom brushes with the exact same attributes as the normal ones. Lots of these type of effects can be made with Path or the Brush tool. But, this tool does allow for some advanced and precise patterns.
What It Does: The Paint Bucket tool is the most important tool in Photoshop and the one that most users will use the most. It fills a specific area with a solid color. This can be done over a background as well as an area of an image. The Gradient Fill tool is really an extension of the Paint Bucket. You can get rectangular and elliptical color gradients that can be placed over any selected area.
What It Does: The clone tool is extremely useful to clone another area of an image. Cloning can be done over an area or over an entire image. The new cloning options in Photoshop CC allow you to start with a clone, apply effects to it, or do some additional operations such as using layers without duplicating the original image.
What It Does: The Adjustment panel allows the user to make subtle changes to the various settings of an image. As you increase the settings, the image will look much more enhanced.
