The campaign mode is broken up into five chapters, each with their own story and missions. In Chapter One, you are a USAAF fighter pilot during the Battle of Britain, and your adventures begin with a romancing mission to steal some English beer. Once you have made it there, you will nonetheless be attacked by 10 Germans planes, and as they begin to make quick work of you, you will be given two choppers to escape.
The story serves to give depth to the gameplay, as your aircraft is powered by the lives of your pilot. If you die, you die, so to speak. Your only escape is to land and refuel. If you have a dogfight with these relentless planes, you will lose, and you won’t copy over. Rather than becoming more powerful, your aircraft becomes progressively slower. The story is quite good, and certain aspects of it do work better than others. For example, the missions where you try to hit a train or a particular ship are hopelessly unfair. Frequency of events and the overall improvement of your pilot are good, and the missions where you just want to go for a joy ride in the countryside are quite fun.
As you fly around, you will begin to notice the strangeness of the three-dimensional world. You can roll, pitch, and yaw to the left and right, and have to consider how much control you want in these movements. That means you have to keep your head in the sky, which makes for a nerve-wracking experience.
The planes don’t look particularly pretty, but they do their jobs pretty well. There are a number of plane types, and they taxi, take off, and land without much problem. While dogfighting is the main event, you’re eventually forced into a number of air-to-air encounters. The games lacks sound, but I’m confident that the developers neglected this for a good reason, because the framerate is so smooth.
